Value Judgments: Essays

Value Judgments: Essaysby Ellen GoodmanHarperCollins

In "Value Judgments", Ellen Goodman takes the measure of contemporary American life with the originality, common sense, and humane insight that have made her one of our most trusted and admired commentators. This book collects more than 120 of the best pieces from Goodman's renowned column, revealing her striking mind and sharp wit as she applies them to a range of topics as broad as America itself. Her enduring subject, she tells us in the book's introduction, is "the world as we experience it, a place where life spills over the retaining walls"-- and whether she is reflecting on the abortion wars, the changing roles of men and women, or the tensions and consolations of marriage and family life, her distinctive blend of cool reasonableness and sudden intuition strikes the reader again and again as the voice of our common wisdom. In everything she writes, Goodman is in search of our values, our "ethics and standards, the qualities in life that mean the most to us. The things that matter." Always genuine, continually provocative, surprising, and beguiling, "Value Judgments" leaves the reader with a refreshed and deepened understanding of the complex world that is ours.

On Abstract and Historical Hypotheses and on Value-Judgments in Economic Sciences: By Luigi Einaudi. Edited, with an Introduction and an Afterward, by ... Studies in the History of Economics)

by Luigi EinaudiRoutledge

Luigi Einaudi (1874-1961) was a leading liberal economist, economic historian and political figure. This book provides the English-speaking world with a first critical edition of an unpublished version of Einaudi’s most important epistemological essay.

The issues analysed here lie at the core of the problem concerning the nature and scope of economic sciences and the role played by economists in the public sphere, with particular emphasis on the interaction between economists and the ruling class.

The earlier version of this essay has also been considered the "historical epilogue" of the Italian tradition in public finance. An extensive reappraisal of this newly discovered document will help to reconsider and cast light on that tradition. This critical edition includes a comprehensive introduction and conclusion, both of which aim to place Einaudi’s essay in the context of his earlier epistemological speculation and the associated debates, and to assess the unsettled questions he left as an enduring heritage for the current generation of social scientists.

An axiomatic characterization of value judgments relative to a reference point [An article from: Mathematical Social Sciences]

An axiomatic characterization of value judgments relative to a reference point [An article from: Mathematical Social Sciences]by A. MunnichElsevier

This digital document is a journal article from Mathematical Social Sciences, published by Elsevier in . The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Much theoretical and experimental work suggest that individual preferences depend on the individual's reference point (or status quo, or standard). We present an axiomatic characterization of value judgments relative to a reference point. The derived models present closed formulas for the reference comparison function, and include the reference point. By these functional forms of the possible reference comparison functions, the role of the reference point in the relative judgment is characterized.

A career choice problem: An example of how to use MACBETH to build a quantitative value model based on qualitative value judgments [An article from: European Journal of Operational Research]

A career choice problem: An example of how to use MACBETH to build a quantitative value model based on qualitative value judgments [An article from: European Journal of Operational Research]by C.A. Bana e CostaElsevier

This digital document is a journal article from European Journal of Operational Research, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
MACBETH (measuring attractiveness by a categorical based evaluation technique) is an approach designed to build a quantitative model of values, developed in a way that enables facilitators to avoid forcing decision makers to produce direct numerical representations of their preferences. MACBETH employs a non-numerical interactive questioning procedure that compares two stimuli at a time, requesting only a qualitative judgment about their difference of attractiveness. As the answers are given, their consistency is verified, and a numerical scale that is representative of the decision maker's judgments is subsequently generated and discussed. This paper makes use of the MACBETH approach and software to help an individual select his future career from a number of self-imposed possibilities. A comparison is made with the direct numerical technique SMART, previously used with the same intent.

The effect of a reason's truth-value on the judgment of a fallacious argument [An article from: Acta Psychologica]

The effect of a reason's truth-value on the judgment of a fallacious argument [An article from: Acta Psychologica]by Y. NeumanElsevier

This digital document is a journal article from Acta Psychologica, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
Informal reasoning fallacies are arguments that are psychologically persuasive but not valid. In the context of informal reasoning fallacies, the truth-value of the reason in support of a given claim is irrelevant to judging the validity of the argument as a whole. This property stands in sharp contrast with the general role of the reason's truth-value in judging arguments in general. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that in the context of informal reasoning fallacies the truth-value of a reason influences pupils' judgment of the extent to which the reason supports the claim. The results of the study confirm the research hypothesis.

An extended process of value judgment [An article from: International Journal of Hospitality Management]

An extended process of value judgment [An article from: International Journal of Hospitality Management]by H. OhElsevier

This digital document is a journal article from International Journal of Hospitality Management, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.

Description:
This paper shows how lodging consumers process brand and price information toward an overall value judgment. The concepts of perceived risk and price fairness are introduced as additional mediating constructs to a traditional value framework. Brand name also is redefined as to separate effects of brand class and brand awareness, and their relationships with perceived value are reexamined. Results of a web experiment generally support the proposed process of value judgment. In addition, brand class and brand awareness appear to influence value perceptions through different pathways. The article includes discussions on managerial implications and suggestions for future research.
